Fruitvale Station
Fruitvale station is a true story based on the real events of the murder of Oscar Grant. The shooting sparked much outrage and emotion among communities. The police officer went on trial for murder soon after the shooting and received only 2 years in prison. In court claimed that he mistook the gun for his Taser. What also shocked the communities was the shocking scenes caught on a phone of Oscar grant being shot by the police officer. This sparked off more anger and allegations against the police officers and had people and communities more angry that the officer was only sentenced to 2 years in prison.
Throughout the film we see glimpses of links between the events building up to the shooting of Oscar Garnt and other clashes of what can be related or linked. For example the scene when the stray dog gets hit by a car. Before we see this dog get hit, we see that it was friendly and kind to Oscar. This highlighted themes of love and care. Although he didn't exactly know the dog he showed it appreciation. Unknowingly the dog walks into the road and gets hit by a car. Automatically Oscar runs into the road and carries the dog onto th pavement. For someone that didn't know this dog he showed a lot of apreciation and care for this dog. This is simple to what happened to Oscar later down in the film because he was a harmless man at the time that was wrongly arrested for doe, thing he didn't do. Later on still be harmless and detained he was brutally shot and killed. Being unaware of how alerting his surroundings were, like the dog, he was still murdered for something which he didn't do or have to do die for.
The films message is very clear and strong. It carries weight throughout the film which make the shock of the ending even more effective. Oscar isn't the best role model to look up to but the life the film showed him to have we see that he did care for people the people he loved and no matter always put others ahead of himself. Grant was good at heart and was indeed trying to turn his life around during his last days alive. The preferred reading is that the film depicts the unjust murder of a young unarmed black man by racist white police officers.
